Nicaragua Tourism slowly increasing
Over the last five years people coming to Nicaragua has increased dramatically. However that increase include business travelers, NGO workers, and Nicaraguans living overseas coming home to visit family. Nicaragua tourism has also enjoyed an increase in real visitors coming for a Nicaragua vacation as well. However, the truth is Nicaragua tourism is still in its infancy.
When looking online you may come to find many sites that compare Nicaragua to Costa Rica as ideal vacation destinations. Many notable Newspapers have used the headline “Nicaragua the next Costa Rica” as the ideal vacation destination. There are some similarities between the two countries; i.e. Former Spanish colonies, the same language, and they share a border, that’s where the comparison should stop. It would be like comparing of Texas to Vermont.
To be sure Costa Rica is beautiful, and they have been heavily promoting and developing touristic infrastructure for the last 40 years. On the other hand, Nicaragua has been a relative new comer to this type of promotion and development. For example, in the capital, Managua, there are an estimated 980 hotel rooms. Period.
But, Like Martha Stewart says “that’s a good thing”.
The case of Nicaragua Tourism – Sometimes less is more
Since Nicaragua tourism is not so slick and polished it allows visitors to see, no to experience, a unique destination that hasn’t been yet been “Disney-fied” with mega hotels and walled-off beach resorts.
Many of our tours that we offer use private boat, 4 wheel drive trucks, and small airplanes. Not because it’s cool, but because there is no other way to reach the destinations. No highways have yet been built that take you directly to a kiosk where you can buy a ticket to go on your rain forest hike.
To be sure there are the occasional hiccups when compared to a modern smooth running vacation destination. Internet is spotty, as is cell phone coverage. The occasional hot water shortage at some of the more remote hotels and lodges do occur. The difference between vegetarian and vegan is not understood by most restaurants, but that’s where our company, Tours Nicaragua steps in. We work to smooth out some of these issues on behalf of our travelers.
Someday Nicaragua Tourism will be as sophisticated as other Central American countries. We will undoubtedly get our 500 room hotels with the obligatory adjoining convention center, 50 seat tour buses roaming the country, but until then now is the time to visit.
If you are looking for real adventure and not just fabricated fun developed by corporations then Nicaragua vacation is what you have been in search of. The Corn Islands, Ometepe, Granada, Leon, 7 active volcanoes, one of the largest lake in Central America, the beautiful Mukul beach on the pacific, the San Juan river along with the opportunity truly experience the warmth of a proud historic people, is a must do for many travelers.
